After two years away from the stage, Shasta High’s music department is back with a musical, “Fiddler on the Roof.”

We got a sneak preview during last night’s dress rehearsal.

These seniors are finally able to finish what they started when COVID stopped rehearsals while they were sophomores.

“The story parallels almost exactly [to Ukraine] the Anatevka is in Ukraine and they’re being annexed from their village; people being forced to leave their homes, just what’s happening today," said Spencer. "It’s been a chance for us to really discuss what’s happening today and what would it be like to be pushed out of your own homes. So, it’s been pretty cool!” Gavin Spencer, Faculty Director.

"Fiddler on the Roof" features Tevye, played by Francisco Grijalva, and Golda, played by Trinity Hess: a Jewish couple with five daughters.

“I get to play a mom who has five kids. She watches her kids grow up, helps them behave, and makes sure the town and their house is running smoothly. It’s really special getting to work on stage with my fellow friends and best people around!” said Trinity Hess, playing the character “Golda."

“We’ve got a huge range of actions and motions and such. I’d say just learning the character and getting everything about it is probably the hardest part," said Francisco Orijalva, playing the character “Tevye.”

Sara Medina is coordinating all the dancing. She says she gets to play both a man and a woman.

“It’s really fun because you get to see both how Jewish women typically dance and how the boys get to have more fun with it and are open with the different dances,” said Sara.

"Fiddler on the Roof" opens Thursday night in the David Marr Theatre on the U-Prep campus in Redding. It runs Thursday through Saturday, then next Thursday through Saturday, May 12-14.
