Join Choir!

  • All incoming freshman must enroll in either Nightingales (Beginning Women’s) or Troubadours (Beginning Men’s) class.

    Auditions are not required.

    Students who are trying to fulfill college entrance requirements and take choir every year may experience scheduling conflicts, specifically with foreign language, P.E. and other electives. Alternatives include Shasta College Dual Enrollment, Shasta Collegiate, Summer Classes through BYU, etc. Talk to your counselor early to make this work or email Mr. Spencer directly at gspencer@suhsd.net

  • It is recommended that all new sophomore, junior, or senior students enroll in Nightingales (Beginning Women’s) or Trouabdours (Beginning Men’s) class.

    If students have choir experience from a previous school and would like to be placed in an advanced choir class, please contact Mr. Spencer at gspencer@suhsd.net and your counselor for an audition/vocal placement test.

  • IMPORTANT: Our program is accessible to everyone. All students have an equal chance to audition. A students’ inability to pay DOES NOT hinder their participation in choir, Madrigal Dinner, or Musical. Please contact Mr. Spencer at gspencer@suhsd.net for more questions or concerns.

    Annual Choir Fee: The fee covers student choir themed t-shirts and performance attire use and cleaning.

    T-shirts - All students will be given a Shasta High Choir shirt which they can keep at the end of the year. This will be worn during informal performances and choir trips.

    Performance Attire - All students will receive a dress or tuxedo which they will borrow. These will be worn during formal performances. Performance Attire is professionally cleaned at the end of each school year.

    Madrigal Dinner Fee: The fee covers student t-shirts, costume use (not including shoes and tights) and cleaning, and cast refreshments during performances. (NOTE: Madrigal Dinner is an audition based, after-school extracurricular activities. Choir students are not required to participate except for those in Madrigals class.)

    Costumes - The cast will be fitted for costumes which they will borrow. These will be worn during performances. Costumes are professionally cleaned at the end of the season.

    Cast Refreshments - The cast will be fed an assortment of food during performances.

    Musical Fee: The fee covers student t-shirts, costume use (including shoes) and cleaning, and cast refreshments during dress rehearsal and performances. (NOTE: Musical is an audition based, after-school extracurricular activities. Choir students are not required to participate.)

    T-shirts - The cast will be given a Musical shirt which they can keep after the season. This will be worn on specific days to promote the show.

    Costumes - The cast will be fitted for costumes which they will borrow. These will be worn during performances. Costumes are professionally cleaned at the end of the season.

  • Auditions will take place at the end of each school year.

    Nightingales can enroll in Nightingales class for an additional year or audition for Choraliers (Advanced Women’s) class. Students must take Choraliers before auditioning for A capella and Madrigals class.

    Troubadours and Choraliers can enroll in Troubadours or Choraliers class for an additional year or audition for A capella (Advanced Mixed) class. They also have the option to audition for Madrigals (Advanced Mixed) class. Those who are accepted into Madrigals must also be enrolled in A capella. Madrigals and A capella are two different class periods.

    A capella can enroll in A capella class for an additional year. No audition required. They also have the option to audition for Madrigals (Advanced Mixed) class. Those who are accepted into Madrigals must also be enrolled in A capella. Madrigals and A capella are two different class periods, typically zero and sixth respectively.

  • Madrigal Dinner and Musical are audition based, after-school extracurricular activities. Choir students are not required to participate.

    Madrigal Dinner auditions happen in the fall. Audition materials and instructions will be distributed in advanced. Typically, students are required to present Renaissance or Medieval jokes and riddles. Please discuss with Mr. Spencer if students plan to also play a sport or other after-school activities. Schedules may conflict hindering the ability to join both.

    Musical auditions after winter break at the end of January or early February. Audition materials and instructions will be distributed in advanced. Typically, students are required to sing a piece from the chosen musical and learn a choreographed dance. Please discuss with Mr. Spencer if students plan to also play a sport or other after-school activities. Schedules may conflict hindering the ability to join both.
